Stay Healthy Around Your Flock
What illnesses can spread from birds to people and the steps to help prevent it
What “zoonotic” means
Zoonotic diseases can spread from animals to people. In backyard flocks, germs like avian influenza, Salmonella, E. coli, and Campylobacter can make people sick.
How Germs Spread
- Handling birds, droppings, dirty bedding, or dusty coop air
- Washing waterers or tools in a kitchen or bathroom sink
- Shoes, clothes, and gear carrying germs into cars and homes
- Eating or drinking before washing your hands
Stay Safe Around the Coop
- Wear dedicated boots and clothes in the flock area; keep them out of the house
- Wash hands after handling birds, eggs, or equipment (soap and water or hand sanitizer)
- Do not eat or drink near birds or in the coop/run
- Don’t kiss birds or let them near your face
- Cover cuts/scrapes; clean any bites or scratches right away
How Keep Germs Out of the House
- Take off or wipe boots before entering vehicles or the house
- Clean bird gear outside, not in food-prep sinks
- Collect eggs daily; dry-clean dirty shells; refrigerate promptly; cook eggs until whites and yolks are firm
Extra Care for Higher-risk People
- Young children, adults 65+, pregnant people, and anyone with a weak immune system should use caution around the coop. Avoid handling birds and equipment; if contact is needed, wear gloves, dedicated clothing and boots, and a mask, then wash hands right after.
Why This Matters
Taking these steps helps protect you and your family while enjoying your backyard flock.
